The many reasons I loved Bridgerton

There are many reasons to start watching a new TV show. The fact that we are in a pandemic with loads of free time is a prime example. But even as I say this, with universities/schools starting back up, especially the online ones, free time is scarce. So, when one does have time to be free from all the classes, homework, and assignments, the one perfect way to spend time relaxing is by watching a show. Scrolling through Netflix, I was uncertain about what to start until I finally decided to watch Bridgerton.

Bridgerton was a show that really had me invested and engrossed in its proceedings. The eight episodes, filled with romance, mystery, and the lavish style of rich England, had millions of fans swooning. This show can only be described as a guilty pleasure, with dukes and baronesses infatuated with each other in the beautiful English countryside. The Disney Princess-loving fangirls would enjoy the romantic encounters between the characters and, moreover, the racy chemistry between the leads, although you might want to keep the kiddies away for this one.

For a little background, Bridgerton is based on a series of novels by author Julia Quinn and is produced by Shonda Rhimes, who has made gems of television such as Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. The show is centered around the Bridgerton family, which consists of Viscountess Bridgerton and her eight children. The drama centers particularly around Daphne, who is the first daughter of the Viscountess Bridgerton. Although the show is not oriented around Daphne and her family alone, they are the main contributors to the scandalous Lady Whistledown.

Lady Whistledown is what adds to the mystery of the show. A journalist whose identity is unknown, the mysterious figure writes about all the sensual scandals going around the town. This brings out a certain anxiety in each viewer, desperate to know who the devious Lady will write about next. The show brings out many unique ideas and it shows viewers the pleasures that royalty enjoyed back then. The extravagant dresses with sparkling jewelry and the magical balls filled with ballroom dancing that no one would think would be able to make their hearts flutter, but Bridgerton does exactly that.

Another aspect that really drew me in was how the romance between the main leads wasn’t the focal point of the entire show. There were many moments where you could see the bond between the eight siblings, and the motherly love the Viscountess Bridgerton showcased. Moreover, friendship was another major emotion that was present. Still, the chemistry between the leads pushes the show to a whole new level, making each exchange sensual and romantic, leaving the viewers thirsting for more.

Bridgerton clearly has many aspects that enamor people from all around the world but one factor that always captures viewers is the scenery. The gorgeous mansions and interiors were downright stunning. Even the carriages looked fancy, but at the same time, there was something cute about them. I definitely wouldn’t mind if horse-drawn carriages made a comeback.

Luckily, I was able to watch the show way before university started but even then, it was a relaxing show that made me feel giddy. One thing I am not proud to admit is that I did finish it in one sitting, but binging a show isn’t too bad, especially when it is one as investing as this. Each episode is roughly an hour long, but I certainly didn’t feel the time go by, as I was so engrossed in the proceedings. So, if you are looking for a show that will make your heart race, leave you feeling giddy, and have plenty of gossip and drama, Bridgerton is one I would highly recommend.
